DIRECTIONS/MAP
The Office of Multicultural Affairs is located in Lavin-Bernick Center on the Garden Level.
The office of Timothy Hornback (the Coordinator of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Life) is also in the Central Building, but located within the Office of Student Programs.
HISTORY
The Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Life was created at Tulane University in 1995. (Originally, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Life was housed within the Senior Vice President and General Counsel's Office.) The office served as link between Senior Management and Tulane's queer community, provided campus services, and played a primary role in researching and advocating for the extension of domestic partner benefits to same-sex partners of university employees.
Since that Timothy, the office has moved. In order to better serve the needs of the student community, LGBT Life was restructured and incorporated into the Office of Multicultural Affairs (a division of Student Affairs) in 2003. In August of 2004, the position of Coordinator of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Life was created within the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
The Office of Multicultural Affairs' staff provides direct support to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and staff; advocates for a safe campus climate for all individuals; and participates in co-sponsorship of programs and activities that foster appreciation and respect for cultural pluralism and diversity.
MISSION
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Life, a facet of Tulane's Office of Multicultural Affairs, provides resources and support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members of the Tulane Community, as well as those who are questioning their sexualities and those who are allies to queer people. We work to create a safe and supportive academic environment by providing educational opportunities for the entire campus community, while advocating for the needs and concerns of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and employees.
We strive to improve the Tulane University campus climate by coordinating efforts across campus; providing outreach to students, staff and faculty; and working to ensure the inclusion of queer issues campus wide. Our goal is to create an open and affirming environment, void of homophobia, heterosexism, and gender bias.
By providing educational, social and support programming; conducting sensitivity training sessions; and offering group and personal advising, the office seeks to meet its goals:
- To provide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students with the academic, social and personal support services that facilitate their adjustment to the University
- To help foster within the University community a respect for and an appreciation of the history, traditions and culture of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities
- To assist academic and administrative departments in implementing policies, programs and activities that increase the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students who enroll in and graduate from Tulane University
